Image Comics - New Release Reviews for January 9, 2013
Last year, Cinematic Auteur David Cronenberg had some less than flattering things to say about movies made from comic books sources. In particular, his diatribe seemed pointed at The Dark Knight Rises and its director Christopher Nolan. Cronenberg, in a recent interview clarified this by saying he never mentioned Nolan or the Batman film.
He then launched a complaint about how his comments were taken out of context and bandied around the internet. He even mentioned he still hasn't seen The Dark Knight Rises. In Cronenberg's defense, neither has New Release Reviews. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.
The End Times Of Bram And Ben - Issue 1 (of 4)
Not only is this new mini-series focused on the rapture very strange but it's wildly entertaining. The thing that keeps it moving so well is a finely tuned sense of humor which is impressive given the apocalyptic aspect of the story. It's very funny, while still having some believable human moments. It drags at a few points but this over-sized issue is a blast. The artwork is solid and the cover is excellent.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
Repossessed - Issue 1 (of 4)
This series seems to be some kind of joke that misses the mark. Like a parody of some sort of fan-boy created comic of the nineties with ridiculous, caricatures of video-game heroes being so over the top, you can only laugh. And one sexy female character that only seems to be there so the reader has something feminine to look at.
Information is dumped, simply to move the plot forward, and it seems to be earned with no visible effort. The pacing is stop and go. The dialogue is bizarre and terrible. The artwork is below average, though some layouts are inventive. The cover is weird and gross. Score: 2 out of 10
