Image Comics - New Release Reviews For May 9, 2012
This past weekend, one of the newest annual traditions in the United States blew up with some Avengers Madness. The annual Free Comic Book Day happened at pretty much every comic book store in America. Image Comics gave away a 20th Anniversary anthology which got gobbled up quickly. FCBD is over but they've got plenty of new releases for the fans. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.
Artifacts - Issue 17
This is a continuing storyline in the Top Cow universe that merited its own on-going series. The thing that jumps out at readers is the artwork which is phenomenal. The covers and the interior are fantastic. The coloring is top-notch and the facial expressions are stylish, yet expressive.
The story drops the overall score a bit. There is a lot of back-story required for new readers which makes things daunting. And to make things worse, motives aren't all that clear for most of the characters. Except for The Darkness who is the most pure in motive, even if he's a bad guy.
Score: 7 out of 10
Chew - Issue 26
This continues to be a strange, and excellent series about a hero with possibly the worst super-power imaginable. The drama is consistent even if it's weird. The supporting cast is, also, weird and not so heroic. It's strange. Very strange. And there is a lot of funny stuff going on in the background.
Score: 8 out of 10
Fatale - Issue 5
This is the last issue of this current story-line and it's not clear if there will be an issue six or a new series. Hopefully there will be more stories as this a clever and engaging series that mixed classic noir with engrossing occult subplots.
