The funny thing about extended vacations is—once in a while—one jumps up out of nowhere, wraps itself around you, and won’t let you go. When you are finally released, you return to your job, where the only evidence of your absence is the sorrowful groaning of your desk (or workspace) under the piles of work that wasn’t important enough for anyone else to do, but absolutely must get done today.

For freelance reviewers, particularly those who aren’t especially in demand, a return to “real” life is accompanied by the fear that not only have your readers forgotten you, but that studios, publishers, and publicists have given up on you. Returning from a three-month sabbatical, I was thrilled to find that neither my fans (that man in Missouri who wants to be Batman and the 8-year-old girl in Chicago who likes my hair) nor sources had totally forgotten me.

Five new titles from Lionsgate and HiT Entertainment feature everyone’s favorite lamb (Timmy), Barney, Thomas (and friends, of course), Angelina Ballerina, Fireman Sam, and Bob the Builder.

July 17, 2012, is the day we don our party hats, indulge in gooey cake, and join the party on Timmy Time: Happy Birthday, Timmy. Can you imagine having more fun than partying with Timmy, even if he does eat the whole cake before the festivities begin? Timmy being Timmy, of course, he comes up with a sweetly creative solution to this party-breaking problem. Timmy Time: Happy Birthday, Timmy includes four more episodes including  lessons on sharing (“Count on Timmy”), friendship (“Timmy’s New Friend”), jealousy (“Timmy’s Pet Problem”), and reaching new heights (“Timmy Learns to Fly”). Without a single line of dialogue and loads of slapstick, Timmy and his friends reinforce good social and personal skills in children aged two through five (although you don’t have to be a toddler to love Timmy). Timmy Time: Happy Birthday, Timmy is available on DVD and includes two bonus features: a Timmy Time Sing-Along and Shaun the Sheep’s “Timmy in a Tizzy” episode.
