Scholastic Storybook Treasures’ Treasury of Storybook Classics 2 is an embarrassment of riches filling seventeen discs with 100 stories on read-along DVDs. Nineteen hours of entertainment are supplemented with extras that will keep young viewers (ages three through nine) endlessly entertained.

Treasury of Storybook Classics 2 brings together a wide variety of stories, many that have been previously released in other collections, starring such popular characters as Corduroy the Bear, Ralph S. Mouse, Red Riding Hood, and Goldilocks, and employing the talents of many narrators, including Thora Birch, Randy Travis, Cyndi Lauper, Abigail Breslin, Mia Farrow, Alfre Woodard, Theodore Bikel, Anthony Edwards, and Laura Dern.

Just in time for the winter holidays, there’s The Night Before Christmas...and More Classic Holiday Tales with seven stories that touch upon a variety of cultures: “The Night Before Christmas,” “In the Month of Kislev,” “Seven Candles for Kwanzaa,” “Too Many Tamales,” “Max’s Christmas,” “Morris’s Disappearing Bag,” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” This disc alone makes Treasury of Storybook Classics 2 a great holiday gift idea.

Sing-along videos include “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” (Cyndi Lauper), “The Wheels on the Bus” (The Bacon Brothers), “Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!" (Chrystal Taliefero), “Hush, Little Baby,” and “This Land is Your Land” (Arlo Guthrie).

As in all of Scholastic’s Storybook Treasures, each video is short enough for a quick bedtime story (when the regular storyteller has run out of ideas), or to fill in some quiet time--especially as a reward for doing something great (like picking up toys). These DVDs support reading, comprehension, and problem-solving among other skills. They score high on the won’t-drive-you-nuts scale when kids want to watch them again and again, and there are stories that adults will want to see more than once.

Treasury of Storybook Classics 2 will be released on October 26, 2010, at the suggested retail price of $99.95, however it is already being discounted (Amazon is selling it for $74.99). Looking at list price, though, that’s only a-dollar-per-story for some of the best children’s literature, including classics.

Bottom Line: Would I buy Treasury of Storybook Classics 2? Yes--it will make a fabulous holiday gift for a lucky family.
