KidVid: The Scrambled States of America Explores the States with the States
New Jersey is not new and is not wearing a jersey. Idaho wants some privacy in the shower. Kansas is tired of living in the middle of the country, never meeting other states. These are just three of the states we meet at a states’ get-together on a new DVD from Scholastic Storybook Treasures, The Scrambled States of America and More Stories by Laurie Keller.
How do the states get scrambled? They decide to switch places. New York ends up on the Pacific coast, Arizona on the Atlantic, and all the states find they have common interests and favorites. The excitement lasts for a few days, but can the states adapt to their new environment and climate? The Scrambled States of America is narrated by Jon Carroll with some famous folks providing voices for the states.
There are three other stories on the DVD: the states get together again for “The Scrambled States of America Talent Show” (Nevada and Mississippi are still in love); Mr. Rabbit learns to be neighborly in “Do Unto Otters (A Film about Manners)”; and Michael McKean (“and 32 others”) narrates “Open Wide: Tooth School Inside.” Bonus features include interviews with author/illustrator Laurie Keller and a music video (“Tooth School Anthem”). The optional read-along feature supports reading skills, while the stories support geography, manners, dental hygiene, and social skills.
For those who are having trouble learning the fifty states (like I did) or minding their manners (like I do) The Scrambled States of America and More Stories by Laurie Keller provide helpful reinforcement—and who doesn’t need to be reminded to brush and floss? Release date: May 24, 2011; recommended for ages 4-10.
