Porn Parody or Paradox?
The porn industry has along with other sectors of the entertainment industry suffered from both recession and the increase in free material online. Now the adult industry’s equivalent of monopolized media; Adult Video News, proudly proclaims to be: “back in business”.
A new sub-genre of porn has emerged: the “porn-parody”, where a porn movie copies the storyline of famous movies and TV-series, such as The Brady bunch and The Batman series. The movie “Batman XXX – A porn parody” from the infamous Vivid Productions company, was last year the best selling porn movie worldwide and the company plans to do more movies in the genre.
The movie has had so much success that “Batman XXX – A porn parody” for example can been found in IMDB’s directory of movies from 2010 along side every other blockbuster produced that year.
In a review of the movie on IMDB’s comment section, a viewer describes quite well how porn is generally viewed by the public:
“The actors look great, the costumes are fantastic, and the whole production has the feel of the original. Except for the genitalia — Adam West never whipped his out. I couldn't stop giggling through the whole production.”
The movie is in this example compared to the original series and reviewed as fun, the same way any other movie is reviewed on IMDB. This shows how porn has now submerged into mainstream media, where it is no longer seen as a secret subculture, yet the element of parody remains.
Gail Dines, a professor of sociology and women’s studies says:
"I think we often make the mistake of thinking that pornography is just an image of people having sex - What pornography is: it is the worldview, it is an ideology, it is s way of understanding relationships." (Quoted from the documentary: “The Price of Pleasure”)
