Titanic disaster completes 100 years, Memories, Prayers all around the Globe
Thousands of people will gather in St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast in a memorial organized to remember RMS Titanic which sunk 100 years before back in 1912. Belfast is the birthplace of Titanic where it was build between 1909-1911 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard.
Titanic struck the iceberg at 11.40pm on April 14, 1912. It sunk at 2.20am on April 15th three hours later following the collision. The sinking of ship resulted in deaths of 1,514 people. About 710 people survive this disaster, they were rescued by RMS Carpathia and were conveyed to New York, the destination where Titanic was supposed to arrive. The ship carried total of 2,223 people.
In an event organized by Titanic Historical Society more than 1.5 million rose petals will be scattered at the place where Titanic sunk. The petals will be scattered bu US Coast guard at 2.20 am, the exact time when Titanic is believed to Sunk.
Also in an other event Musicians from New-York will play the tune 'Nearer My God To Thee' on board a Titanic anniversary cruise ship 'Balmoral'. This tune was the same one which was played by the Titanic's band of musicians who kept it playing even when the ship was sinking.
James Cameroon's multi-Oscar winning Titanic was re-released already on 4th April 2012 all over the world to commemorate the centenary of the tragedy. This film fictionalized the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The 1997 film collected gross of over $1.8 billion. It was the first film to reach the billion dollar mark. It remained the highest-grossing film of all time for twelve long years.
