A Royal Mess
By now the entire world has heard the happy news that Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant. They have my heartfelt congratulations. They also have my condolences. The news of this very private and already seemingly less than straightforward news travelled the globe in a day when the mother- to-be was hospitalized. She is, if media accounts are accurate, suffering Hyperemesis Gravidarum which is prenatal morning sickness so severe she cannot keep anything down and requires rehydration intravenously. How scary for her and Prince William as a newly expectant couple.
Media outlets the world over are reporting bookmakers taking bets on everything from the baby’s sex to its likely name and even more absurdly, which one wil be the heir to the throne if she has twins. Magazines have published special ‘Royal Baby’ editions with pages of ‘information’ and apparent confirmation that she is carrying twins.
This lack of compassion is sickening. This is a young couple expecting their first child together and the public and media are too busy making predictions and taking bets on arbitrary details of a fragile life that is only just starting to burgeon.
The world has gone insane over the Royal Baby. Is it harsh to point out that this pregnancy is still in its very early, delicate stages? That all this excitement and frenzy, whilst somewhat understandable given their status, is very premature. There is no Royal Baby, there is a Royal Pregnancy. Already this couple are being forced into the limelight and forced to endure harassment and speculation because of some absurd fascination by the public about what is going on inside Kate Middleton’s uterus. I would assume that most of the fascination coems from a place of joy and genuine affection for the Royal family. However the media, reminiscent of its veracious pursuits of the late Lady Diana, are insatiable to the point of insanity.
For those who do have this sense of reverence for the Royal Family, surely they can appreciate that all of this scruntiny and speculation places immense pressure upon the expectant parents.Continued on the next page
