Chasing Macy Gray

As a journalist, I have been afforded a few very fortunate opportunities that I can certainly speak of and look back on with pride. Hell, sometimes I might accidentally find myself boastful of some of these accomplishments – well, the one which you’re about to read is no exception to that.
Recently, after eons of trying to track her down – I had the honor of sitting down with the awesome Macy Gray.
I called her up, once she picked up the phone – there was no mistaking the distinctive voice, I was talking to Macy.
Chasing Macy Gray is no understatement, one moment she was in Cannes, the next back in LA, then New York and at that time we talked she was in Spain. “It’s really hectic, but I’m having a blast.” She said in that trademark voice – soft spoken with just a hint of rasp to it. The same voice was inherent, but also different than the one we hear in her songs.
This voice is noticeably shy – soft, friendly and extremely gracious to being showered with compliments. She was just as humbled by compliments as I was in having our conversation.
After taking some time off for parenting, Macy is back in full force and with her creativity in near perfect form. Earlier this year, her newest album Covered was released in stores. Macy will also be starring in a new film being released at the end of the year.

Bryan: Covered was a masterpiece of creativity – you truly made the songs your own. What was the driving force behind choosing to cover these particular songs?
Macy: Well, of course I’m a fan of those songs. I’m a big rock n’ roll fan, it mostly came down to the lyrics – you know, songs that I felt like I could sing and I could mean it; songs that would sound natural coming from me and that was the main thing for me. I’m a fan of all those songs, I really love those songs.
Bryan: I loved your version of Smoked 2 Joints, even better than the original version.
Macy: Oh you do? (Laughs) Oh, I love the Sublime version. I’m a huge fan of Sublime, I wanted to do one of their songs – but then, you know when you’re a fan of something you feel funny covering it a little bit because it… You don’t want to… I don’t know but I couldn’t do like a lot of them I love but that’s the only one I felt comfortable doing because it really wasn’t theirs anyway… You know.
