Danny Pudi: In the Security Line At The Airport
I was graced by the opportunity to chat with über funny guy Danny Pudi, one of the stars of the NBC sitcom, Community. The character that he portrays can easily be referred to as one of the human dictionary definitions of sarcasm– Abed Nadir.
We’d been playing some phone tag for a few days, but we finally caught up to each other one afternoon as I was sitting in this room at my job that I call a fluorescent 4x6 cell complete with a table, fridge, cheap silverware, bad dishes and a microwave that can remind anyone of their own advancing age (they call it a break room).
We had a few fleeting minutes to talk because Danny was going through the security line at LaGuardia – at that point, I learned about how organized he likes to be at the airport – “I don’t like to be that guy, I keep my shoelaces loose, my pants loose, everything loose… I guess I’m always ready to be strip searched, I don’t know if that’s a good thing, but because I travel so much nothing is tight on me at anytime.” – Minutes later, after I wiped the coffee off of the table from my unintentional spit take and we each regained our composure from laughing so hard – Danny and I had a brief but cool conversation about playing Abed and his current projects.
Community is one of the funniest and most well-written shows on television that you’re probably not watching – once you do there’s no turning back.
“Abed is an exciting character to play, he’s written so well – I think all of the writing is so creative. Dan Harmon does a really good job – I think his goal is to write really smart material, but at the roots it has to make sense for these characters. So, it’s never just about the joke; it’s about what the character is going through and the joke has to make sense within that world. Abed has one of the more unique points of view in a character, so that to me is a joy to play.”
