Decisions and the Gosselin Case

Every so often each of us is faced with a right and wrong scenario and a crossroads. The word integrity, that amorphous four syllable word that, like love is hard to describe comes into play when deciding to go left or right.

I had a curious time recently with the “celebrity press” that has given me pause to think and then think again about what to do with an agreement made and then discounted.

I crafted the following statement to be clear. I hope those of you who read this can see the time and effort I have put into my decision not to appeal a case that I am sure I would win. The big question for me is “what is winning”? I believe I have already won by taking the road less traveled; less traffic to encounter!

GOSSELIN RESPONSE June 17, 201

On May 13, 2011 Magisterial District Judge Gerald Feissner of Freeland Pa., rendered a judgment in my favor against Kate Gosselin who filed an appeal on May 17, 2011.

My claim arose after Ms. Gosselin failed to pay a verbally agreed-upon fee of $10,476 for counseling services delivered by my company Creative Energy Options, Inc. and by me personally. The fee also included her requirement that I fly to Los Angeles, Ca. for sessions after she decided not to return to Pa. for a previously scheduled meeting with her then husband Jon. While inconvenient and requiring a last minute change of plans, I decided to honor the request.
The court agreed with me and awarded $10,325 in damages and $151 in court costs. After much thought I have decided to withdraw my claim and not contest Ms. Gosselin’s appeal.

Why?

First, my suit, at its heart, was never mostly about cash. As so many legal claims are, mine was about principle; about right and wrong; about taking responsibility and being accountable for one’s words and deeds. The court’s decision gives me all the validation I need.

Second, if I decided to continue this case, I fully believe I would prevail.  I'm far from the first to observe, or experience, how the celebrity press operates and this is not where my interests lie.

Third, I don’t want to be party to a proceeding that would undoubtedly require thousands of taxpayer dollars to be spent trying an appeal and providing extra security for it. We’ve all got more important things to do.

Signed,
