Kate Middleton: the Naked Queen
I don't particularly find the British Royal Family all that fascinating, and I question whether or not Americans should be so captivated by royalty, as we often seem to be, and which led me to boycott GMA in 2011 after being fed-up with its relentless coverage of the Royal Wedding.
Having said that, I was very saddened to hear about the suicide of a British nurse who was the victim of a prank call to the hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge had been admitted for acute morning sickness, and for the first time, it made me really start to pay attention to the saga of Britain's newest Royal Couple. A couple who cannot even go to the hospital and expect any privacy at all.
I'm glad the Duchess seems to be feeling better, but also I am relived that pressure from the nurse's family combined with public outrage over her suicide, has resulted in an inquiry into her death, in which the hospital is going to have to answer real questions about it. If hospital administrators came down on that poor nurse who already had a very stressful job, over a prank call, then heads are going to roll, and well they should.
The palace also has insisted that they didn't complain about the incident, and boy had that better be true, because if it turns out not to be, the Royal Family may be facing its biggest scandal yet. As for the Aussie DJ's, perhaps they are getting their comeuppance for making their livings by being professional jerks; though I'm sure they never dreamed this would result in such harm, and shouldn't be made responsible for this whole affair when so many of the details about the tragedy have not yet unfolded.
But back to the new Royal Couple. The recent circus which has resulted in such tragedy got me to thinking about the fact that this woman who recently married into the Royal family, has become such a point of celebrity fascination to us, that it's flabbergasting. When women have come so far, accomplished so much, and have so many opportunities, I cannot fathom how a woman that essentially spent her entire adult life waiting around for her boyfriend to finally marry her, seems so worthy of adulation to so many women. Even if that boyfriend is the future King of England. Top that with the fact that she seems to be repeatedly caught on camera with either her skirt up or her bikini bottom down, and it then becomes even more perplexing how she continually has praised heaped upon her by the mainstream media for being such a wonderful role model. However, to give credit where credit is due, it does seem that Kate and Wills have been living a far more low-key, normal life than some of their royal predecessors, but is that really enough to make them worthy of being considered the great hope for the future of the British monarchy?Continued on the next page
