Kate Winslet Is NOT Irritating - Wins $40,000 In Libel Lawsuit As Proof
Kate Winslet has won $40,000 in damages for a lawsuit she brought against the UK's Daily Mail. The high court in London sided with the Oscar-winning actress and the Mail agreed to pay damages, issue an apology and pay for her legal fees.
In an article which headlined on January 30 titled "Should Kate Winslet win an Oscar for the World's most irritating actress?," the paper accused her of lying about her exercise regime and stated she was "vain." All of this just three weeks before she was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in The Reader.
According to Kate, it was the accusations about her diet and exercise regimen which really caused her to take actions about the tabloid paper.
Winslet, who has openly struggled to maintain her weight felt this article was "misleading the public" and was upset by any perceived hypocrisy being cast on her.
"I strongly believe that women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are, so to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy," the 33-year-old mother of two said in a statement.
I'd speculate the timing had everything to do with the article. During the usual rounds of red carpet events leading up the 2009 Oscars, Kate was everywhere, and she looked GREAT. Spectacular even. In an interview just a few days prior to the inflammatory Mail article, Kate admitted the stress of awards season was taking its toll and she had decided she was "not exercising at all, and I’m eating whatever I like."
This was a ripe opportunity for a dodgy rag like the Mail to hit her with their spiteful piece. While I can't say I agree with her decision to sue them (better to ignore morons) congrats to her for winning the suit.
Hey, maybe next time they'll think twice about posting this type of trash. Plus, there are WAY more irritating actresses than Kate Winslet...like most of them.
