Micheal Clarke Duncan passed away in a Los Angeles hospital today. The popular actor had been hospitalized since surviving a heart attack in July.

Best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in 1999 as John Coffee in "The Green Mile," The Green Mile.! His role in that film also garnered him nominations or awards from such organizations as the Screen Actors Guild, ShoWest, Image Awards, the Online Film Critics Society, the MTV Movie Awards and the Golden Globes.

Duncan's first role was in the Bruce Willis starrer, Amageddon in 1998, followed by roles in Breakfast of Champions, The Whole Nine Yards, Sin City, the Scorpion King, and others.

He started out in the business as a bodyguard but his charismatic albeit minor performances in such show as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Married With Children, soon took him to the other side of the camera.

Duncan was known for his sweet smile and gentle nature, his love of cats and his martial arts abilities. In a town filled with drugs and alcohol, he managed to maintain his resistance to the negative and eventually became a role model for many who sought to overcome the obstacles of race and economic status.

He will be missed.
