After Earth - Will Smith Is Back in Theaters June 2013
The most bankable star (arguably) in Hollywood returns after his extremely successful latest film, Men in Black (which has grossed well over $600 million); justifying his A-list-leading $20-28 million per film.
Will Smith is back with the goods, and next summer, just a week before Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel is set to explode onto the screen, the man who played superhero Hancock in the titular 2008 movie will share the screen with an up-and-coming star – his very own son, Jaden Smith.
Directed by none other than M. Night Shyamalan, After Earth follows a formerly absentee father in General Cypher Raige (Will Smith), who travels with his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) from a new planet called Nova Prime on a spacefaring journey. Things don’t go as planned – they never do, do they? – and the duo are forced to land on an Earth that humans have long-since abandoned. However, the planet is now ruled by something else…
The visuals in After Earth look very good, and this space adventure seems to be a coming-of-age story set on a now-alien planet. We’ve seen Smith and his son before, in the rousing story Pursuit of Happyness from 2010, so their albeit very short track record of success onscreen together is solidified. Monkeys, rogue missile systems and animals that are definitely not cuddly show flashes of their teeth in the short teaser, which does a good job of leaving us wanting more scenes.
