Opening today in theatres across North America, director Joss Whedon's The Avengers is exactly the blockbuster that fans have been hoping for, and it comes with a lot of surprises, including the charming Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill.

The very funny How I Met Your Mother star, who plays the lovable gun-totting Robin Scherbatsky in the television series, takes charge in The Avengers like a real life action hero, which is impressive when you consider the star power she has to contend with in the film.

During a recent interview in Toronto, she talked about how she took charge in the film, while touching on what it's like going from being funny, to playing the tough-as-nails Agent Maria Hill alongside super stars Robert Downey, Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson.

When asked what she wants to do next, between doing more comedy or more action films, Smulders said, "You know, [I am] open to action films. They make me feel really cool, and you get to do things, not only physically, but it's just a whole other medium... you're sort of working with technology when you're working in an action film, and that was really cool to do."

While Smulders still loves her role in How I Met Your Mother, she admitted, "I was just excited to do something that was just such a jump in a different direction." She went on to add, "I just wanted to play a different character, and so when this came around, I was like, 'This is the best possible job that I could get.'"

Playing the character came with a fair amount of preparation though. When asked if she was given material to prepare with, Smulders said, "No, not at all... I was abandoned."
