shrek the whole storyMany moons ago, husband FCE and I were in a video rental joint in Baton Rouge, looking for something we hadn’t seen. We couldn’t find anything. Meekly, I offered, “we could try Shrek, it’s supposed to be funny,” both knowing in our hearts that it wouldn’t be. What an awesome surprise! The original Shrek wasn’t just funny, it was absolutely hysterical. It was witty, clever, and amazingly well done. Immediately, we bought a copy.

The Shrek sequels remained true to the original Shrek spirit, and we’ve enjoyed them all. Dreamworks just released a boxed set, Shrek: The Whole Story which includes all four films in the series--Shrek , Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After. As advertisers scream on TV, “BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…” No, you do not get a set of Ginsu knives with the purchase of Shrek: The Whole Story, but you do get Donkey’s Christmas Shrektacular.

Donkey’s Christmas Shrektacular offers two features. The first is the best video Yule log ever, Shrek’s Yule Log, which is, of course, a video of Shrek’s fireplace with a nice fire going and instrumental music in the background. Enjoy the crackling, animated fireplace, as well as the visits to the fireplace by many Shrek characters (such as Big Bad Wolf attempting to throw Pinocchio on the fire because it is low on wood).

Donkey's Christmas ShrektacularThe second feature on Donkey’s Christmas Shrektacular is Donkey’s Caroling Christmas-tacular,”, a holiday sing-a-long. Viewers have the choice of following the bouncing ball or turning off the subtitles. Expect slight changes to the lyrics as in “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” or  total rewrites as in “Jingle Bells” and “Fleas Navidad” (sung by Puss in Boots). It’s very short, and—depending on your age—either very cute or very funny.
