It’s a Clown Beat-Down on DVD: Klown Kamp Massacre (2010)
When the last film one has seen is My Stepdad’s a Freakin’ Vampire, one is inclined to give anything a rave review. Klown Kamp Massacre, a new release from Troma, may inspire more raving than rave, but considering that its production values are about 3000% lower than My Stepdad’s a Freakin’ Vampire, it comes across as a valuable piece of cinematic history. It’s totally crap, but it’s the kind of crap that is so crappy it’s funny, very funny. Plus, instead of vampires getting killed, clowns do—and who’s not down with that?
Lots of people hate clowns (Rodney Blackwell hates clowns so much, he runs ihateclowns.com, a 15-year-old site where clown haters and clownophobics can learn “34 Reasons Why You Should Hate Clowns,” buy clown-hater t-shirts and coffee mugs, and generally be down on clowns), and clown-haters will probably enjoy Klown Kamp Massacre, especially if they want to see clowns murdered.
With clowns causing so much fear and hatred, we can’t help but wonder if they are really popular or if they are used to send us a message (like, “Eat at McD’s or Ronald will get you”). Jack Handy hates clowns, and in a “Deep Thought” he shared the reason: "To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad." Clown hatred obviously has its roots in fact and experience.
Who could hate clowns more than a clown whose life was ruined by…you guessed it…clowns? Edwin (Jared Herholtz) had only one ambition in life, to be a clown. To reach his goal, he went to Klown Kamp (a locally accredited university) where he wasn’t too funny. On the night of his big performance, some clown’s cell phone rings, ruining his act. What else could he do but slaughter everyone there? That was 15 years ago, and the Kamp has been closed ever since then (something about an evil curse).
