African Cats is a magnificent look into the lives of lions and cheetahs—their familial styles and the perils they face. Focusing on two females, the film follows Sita, the cheetah mother of five cubs, and Mara the lioness cub of Layla, the pride leader. While there is violence, loss, and death, African Cats does not dwell on these subjects (or zoom in to bloodshed), but instead examines the roles of the mother cats in raising and protecting their cubs.

Breathtaking cinematography captures the Kenyan savanna and its glorious skies, while close-ups of these gorgeous animals reveal expressive faces and battle scars. The cats share their environment with and are threatened by elephants, warthogs, hyenas, and crocodiles, sometimes being the hunted instead of the hunters.

African Cats’ greatest appeal is the relationships among the cats. Watching Mara comforting her injured mother or Sita’s brave attempts to keep predators away from her cubs reminds us of the bonds that unite families. While some may claim their behaviors are instinctive, it seems clear that, like us, these animals have emotions.

Disneynature's African Cats is available as a 2-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, a High Definition Movie Download, and On-Demand. The DVD includes two bonus features: “Disney and Nature” and “Save the Savanna.” The Blu-ray includes the two DVD features plus “Filmmaker Annotations” and a Jordin Sparks music video (“The World I Knew”). The HD download includes the DVD bonuses, and excerpts from “Filmmakers Annotations”: “Introduction to Masai Mara,” “Filming the Cats,” and “Sophie’s Elephants.” The film is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.
