Oblivion Trailer – Starring Tom Cruise
Just this weekend, Director Joseph Kokinski’s Tom Cruise-driven dystopia released a trailer that gives us a sneak peek into the upcoming movie Oblivion. It’s about a bleak world after a war between humanity and an unknown alien threat, which could comprise either a direct attack on humans or a fight between two alien species that used earth as a battleground.
The imagery looks great – the floating rhomboidal platforms in the distance have enough gravity to feel almost real as you sit back from the screen. The earth itself is a wasteland, and any fans of speculative fiction writer Harlan Ellison might be minutely reminded of his classic 1969 tale, A Boy and His Dog. The flying ship careening out from his sky-world quickly snaps you out of the comparison. Although it’s hard to tell exactly what the movie is about, it does appear Cruise, playing Commander Jack Harper, is in for a surprise: the war may not be what he and everyone else was led to believe.
As can be expected, Cruise dominates the screen, although he shares it with the lovely actresses Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough. Morgan Freeman shows up later to add his considerable weight to the cast, as a resistance leader from the war that ravaged the earth, evacuating it and sending some humans sky-ward.
Time to see if Hollywood mega-star Tom Cruise can still carry a movie – given all the recent pro-Katie backlash. Just remember what happened to Mel Gibson after his house became disordered. Although Oblivion looks good, we’ll definitely need more trailers between now and April 2013 to ratchet up more interest.
