Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Now on DVD/Blu-Ray/VOD
Johnny Depp may have single-handedly breathed life into the pirate genre when he spoke his first lines as Jack Sparrow in the original Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Oh, sure, he had a fabulous cast, smart writing, and a multi-million dollar budget behind him, but it was Depp who charmed the audience with his portrayal of the audacious swashbuckler. It wasn’t just the character that Depp played, or that it was Johnny Depp, but that Depp seemed to be having so much fun with the character.
With the economy being what it is and the fact that Pirates of the Caribbean is now on Chapter 4, it would be reasonable to expect a declining interest in the franchise. Reasonable but wrong. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has, so far, been the number one box office hit of 2011, earning more than $1-billion worldwide.
Released for home video October 18, 2011, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides offers fans a multitude of choices: a Limited Edition 5-Disc Combo Pack (1-Disc Blu-ray 3D + 2-Disc Blu-ray + 1-Disc DVD + 1- Disc Digital Copy); a 2-Disc Combo Pack (1-Disc Blu-ray + 1-Disc DVD); a 15-Disc Four Movie Collection (I’m thinking holidays for this collection); and 3D and High-Definition Movie Download.
What wonders could possibly fill a fifteen-disc set? To begin with, the Collection is packaged in a replica of a pirate’s chest that includes a map and a skull disc case to hold the Blu-ray and digital copies of all four Pirates of the Caribbean films. There are three discs for each of the first three films: 2-disc Blu-ray and 1-disc digital copy; and for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, there are a 1-disc Blue ray 3D, 2-disc Blu-ray, digital copy, and DVD. The Blu-ray bonus disc includes the new, “never-before-seen” short film “Wedlocked" as well as a plethora of bonus features.
Overkill? Not for the Captain Jack Sparrow fan.
