Sites Strive to Help Us Remember All Those Damn Dwarves in The Hobbit
You've done your part in helping The Hobbit continue its skyrocketing box office sales trend, watching the movie, either in the regular, high frame rate 3D, or even in heavenly IMAX 3D. Or any combination thereof.
But how many of you have tried to explain the movie to the uninitiated, the non-reader of J.R.R. Tolkein's sweeping panorama of Middle Earth? Oh, we slogged through it years ago with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, our animated post-movie descriptions of Orcs, Elves, Hobbits, Ents, Wargs, Oliphants, Balrogs and more causing glassy eyed stares, as our co-workers slowly inched back to their desks.
Back, back to your cubicles, losers.
With the first 3-hour dose of the newly released prequel under our belt, however, how do we handle a meaningful discussion of the dwarves? After all, there are thirteen of them - pretty much impossible to remember them all, right?
Maybe not. Hollywood.com has put together a nemonic to help out. Writer Abbey Stone uses the following to help readers out:
"Before bugging busy dwarves, first kill Gollum over night or don't bother trying!"
Which stands for Bofur, Bifur, Balin, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, Gloin, Oin, Nori, Ori, Dori, Bombur, and lastly Thorin. Lumping them together by sound certainly helps.
If the nemonic doesn't quite do the trick, The LOTRProject has released a Flowchart you can print out and study, in order to remember who's who:
Maybe when you go to watch for a second or third time, you can take the cheat sheet along...
