Sleeping Beauty Re-Imagined with Angelina Jolie in Maleficent
Disney has pulled out all of the stops in creating the soon-to-be blockbuster, “Maleficent,” by casting Academy Award®-winning actress Angelina Jolie as the title character.
Walt Disney Studios began production, on June 13th, of the highly anticipated re-telling of the classic Disney tale, Sleeping Beauty.
The original story tell of princess, Aurora, who, at her birth, is cursed by the evil fairy Maleficent, or, in her own words, “the Mistress of All Evil.” The curse is simple - by the sunset of her 16th birthday, Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel (think old-school tech for making thread or yarn), and will die. To counter the evil threat, one of the remaining good fairies lightens the curse to merely falling asleep for 100 years, only to be awakened by “true-love’s first kiss.”
This live-action telling of the story takes place through the eyes of Maleficent. The film also features several other big names in the credits. Robert Stromberg, a two-time Oscar® Winner as production designer (“Avatar” and “Alice in Wonderland”), is taking the helm in his directorial debut. Elle Fanning, of “Super 8” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and Juno Temple, of “The Three Musketeers” and the upcoming “Dark Knight Rises,” add to the memorable cast.
As production photos begin to circulate, message boards, blogs and chat rooms are lighting up with comments and rumors around the production. Releases of pictures of Angelina Jolie in character costumes have sparked a surge of interest in search terms related to the film, such as Maleficent, according to Google Trends. The film is being produced by Joe Roth and was written by Linda Woolverton. The scheduled release date for the film is slated for March 14, 2014, and Walt Disney Studios will present the film for wide release in 3D.
