Summer is Around the Corner, but What Movies Do We Have to Look Forward to?

Summer is almost here and among the several things that it entails, one major thing is movies. Later this month the new Pirates of the Caribbean and Fast and the Furious movies will open followed by Thor and Transfomers 3 with a plethora of movies in between, that desperate movie studios are hoping will be blockbusters during their busiest season.

I'm not particularly looking forward to any films this summer, but I might wander into the theater for Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean if I get bored. Sadly, I've been impressed once, maybe twice with the movies released in the last 2 years. In the onslaught of prequels, sequels, remakes and comics/cartoons/TV shows made into movies, creativity and just plain old good ideas are lacking in Hollywood. Hopefully, that will change as the number of movie tickets sold are about as impressive as the movies themselves.

Amidst all this, there actually is a movie in production that I'm looking forward to. It's a remake, like most films, but it's a classic so it can be done more than once. I'm talking about John Steinbeck's classic, East of Eden. Most people know the original starring James Dean. These are some big shoes to fill and not just because of James Dean. Any book or movie this memorable must be superb to have any justice done for it. Not only that; if you are going to remake a movie, you have to make it better than the original. This is a lesson Hollywood seems to forget. You'd think they'd have learned with Cape Fear and Psycho, but then Halloween, The A Team and so many others were created.

Not much info has been released to the public yet, but it's known that Tom Hooper, who has directed the John Adams HBO miniseries and The King's Speech, is directing. I think it's safe to say that at least the directing will be good. I have heard rumors that Leonardo DiCaprio and Kristen Stewart are possible lead characters, but nothing has been confirmed and the list of actors is constantly changing. Until it's certain, we are left to just speculate who would be best which part. For the first time in quite some time though, I know a good story's in production and I am happy. For now, maybe I'll go reread Steinbeck's books and wait for The Hobbit to be released.
