NPD reports that $1.85 billion has been spent in the first quarter of 2011 by consumers on game content. This content includes but not limited to: downloadable content, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, and mobile games.

Downloadable content is one of the major ways that game publishers distribute content to consumers. Consumers can pay for and download the content directly onto their gaming consoles or computers.

The NPD group goes on to state that consumers have spent over $5.9 billion on hardware and accessories in Q1 of 2011. These numbers are already at a 1.5% increase from the same period last year in 2010.
