elite frontierWhen I was growing up the video game Elite (and the subsequent Frontier) was up there with Sim City at the pinnacle of entertainment.  The space trading game had wonderful graphics (for the time), amazing gameplay and beautiful music.

So news that David Braben, founder of the original, is planning on building a remake is very exciting.  Braben has turned to the crowdfunding website Kickstarter to fund the project.

He's looking for £1.25 million to develop an updated version of the classic game.  The updated version will contain the usual space trading, intergalactic piracy and awesome spaceships as the original.

Interestingly though, for fans if no one else, if you do pledge money to the project via Kickstarter you get to have a say in the development of the new game.

"Elite is a game that I've wanted to come back to for a very, very long time," Mr Braben told the BBC. "It's the sort of game that I would very much like to play today."

When the game was released in 1984 it was so very different to the games of the time.  With 3D graphics and open-ended game play it stood alone against the 2D games of the era.

"It changed the way that people looked at games very much for the better," said Mr Braben.

The updated version will keep the open-ended, space trading setting but its exact final form will be down to those that pledge cash.  Plans are to provide a networked multi-player version of the game as well as a single player version.

"The people who are involved in Kickstarter can be involved in the game," he said.

if funding can be arranged it is hoped the game will be released in March 2014.
