Most gamers my age remember the good old days of graphic based adventure games.  We spent hours in front of a flickering screens, typing in text commands just to explore new worlds on our dumpy old PC’s.  One of my favorites, from game creator Al Lowe, was Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards.  Originally released by Sierra On-line in 1987, it was the first in a long line of Larry games; some good, some not so good.

The original game was set in Lost Wages a humorous take on Las Vegas in the glorious time of the leisure suit.  Leisure Suit Larry gives you two real time hours to control 40 year old virgin Larry Laffer on his quest to lose his virginity and find the woman of his dreams.   The women in the game shun him, excluding the prostitute outside of Lefty's, but can be wooed with gifts purchased from gambling winnings.  Lefty’s Bar opens the game but this is only one of the five areas to be explored as he seeks out his bathing beauty Eve.  Similar to most text based games of the time, Leisure Suit Larry had many outcomes pending on your choices.  One of which has you dying shortly after the game starts should you follow the route of instant gratification. Take a piece of advice, choose your women wisely and be careful with your money.  The humorous game play and sexual over tones provided many a young man an adventure vividly remembered, even 20 plus years later.

It had a simple 2D look in 16 color EGA graphics. The AGI engine allowed for four basic arrow controls for movement and text command entry helped you interact with the AI.  Leisure Suit Larry went through many upgrades throughout the years, not always to the approval of beloved creator Al Lowe.  The great news is Al Lowe has the rights to the game again and he and his team at Replay Games are working on the HD reboot.  Al Lowe will be sticking to the original story, as he explains in the Games Trailers TV interview, giving the game an upgrade rather than a rewrite.  In development now, I and many others my age are looking forward to the update of our favorite leisure suit wearing virgin at E3.
