The Unreal Engine is More Real Than You Think
Tim Sweeney from Epic Games was inducted to the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. Sweeney, know by most gamers for his development of the Unreal Engine first seen in 1998 Epic MegaGames “Unreal.”
The latest carnation of this was the finale to the Gears series, Gears of War 3. The beauty of Sweeney’s work is many other companies looked to license the engine and he made it possible for those companies not only use it but develop upon his work. Many companies have used and are still using this engine for their great games.
A couple popular examples are Irrational Games and their Bioshock Series including the upcoming Bioshock: Infinite and Gearbox Software with Borderlands and upcoming sequel and the list goes on with Ubisoft and Bioware to name just a couple more. The list is long and without the hard work of Sweeny, gaming might look way different than it does now. Sweeney understood that in a changing world of gaming you need to change with it or fall to the wayside. The truly innovating perspective he had was allowing others to use his work and develop games, from the first person shooters to RPGs and everything in between. Congratulations on your induction and thank you for making gaming what it is today.
