Amy Winehouse Might Have Brain Damage

This is your brain.  This is your brain on drugs.

Despite what it might look like, I'm not trying to be funny or poke fun at singer Amy Winehouse.  No, it seems that Amy just might really have damaged some brain cells with two major overdoses in the past year, including a 36-hour hash marathon and enough illegal drugs to kill a horse:

The singer, 24, suffered two major overdoses, with such bad convulsions that they were “like a scene from The Exorcist”.

And her body is so frail from drug use that doctors were scared she would break bones during a fit.

A close pal of Amy’s laid bare the truth – warning medics said one more overdose will probably kill her.

Her first OD was back last August, when she overdid it on cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, ketamine and crystal meth.  She was advised at that time to seek psychiatric help because she displayed "multiple personality traits" that made her a suicide risk.

And remember the last time she was taken to the hospital, when her father said to the media that it was just a bad reaction to her medication?  Well, only if she's toking up for medicinal purposes:

Her second overdose was in July – when she inhaled an “inhuman” amount of hash that left her vomiting uncontrollably and hallucinating.

At the time devoted dad Mitch, 54, said it was a “bad reaction to her medication”.

Medics are worried Amy’s brain was damaged by the cannabis overdose – she displayed symptoms normally associated with schizophrenia.

The pal yesterday said: “The future is bleak, bleak, bleak.

“Mitch does everything he can to protect his daughter - but his ‘explanation’ for Amy’s hospital dash in July was just simply untrue.

“She had smoked an inhuman amount of hash which resulted in acute cannabis poisoning. You have to take a s***load of pot to suffer that severe a reaction.

“It’s thought she had been smoking it for 36 hours.

“Amy’s fits were as bad as the convulsions she had during her overdose in August last year. No one has mentioned her meth use before – but that stuff is truly nasty.

“She is in need of years of psychiatry and medical treatment if she has a hope.”

It's bad enough that Amy, for whatever reason (childhood trauma related to her parent's divorce, depression at being separated from husband Blaaaaaaaaake, etc) has decided that drugs are more important than her talent, obligations, and life.  It's bad enough that she has decided to self-destruct rather than deal with her life in a mature fashion.  But to have her legions of fans, who come out en masse whenever I do one of these stories, stick up for her and say how misunderstood she is and how everybody just needs to leave her alone and let her live her life, is just as sickening as Amy's throwing her life down the toilet.  Here we have the consequences of "leaving her alone" and "letting her live her life"...a drug addict with possible brain damage.

I like Amy and I would love to see her clean up her life.  I realize that she has a problem.  After a while, the drugs take hold and you're just along on a crazy rollercoaster ride.  But at some point, you can make the decision to get off and seek help.  And of all the stars I've seen in the press doing self-destructive things, Amy is the one who most obviously needs serious, intensive help.  She needs to forget her career at this point and lock herself away in some hospital far from the madding crowd and focus solely on getting better.  If she does not, we will be posting a story about her death before the year is out and then read comments from people who will be shocked and surprised and who will blame the media for all Amy's problems.  Amy seems to want to destroy herself, but even people with that mindset can be helped.

Sorry, folks...the media has it's bad side, but it's Amy who must ultimately take responsibility for her life.  And if people (including her family) continue to cover up and make excuses for her obvious problems, and continue to squeeze every last drop of money out of her for as long as they can, and continue to stick her up on a stage to be a freak show for everyone to gawp at, and continue to let her do whatever she likes, then they will be just as culpable as Amy herself.  You know who you are.
