Scientology PSA: Treating Mental Illness Like Blowing Your Brains Out
In a chilling video available on Citizens Commission On Human Rights' website, or the CCHR as those in Scientology refer to it, the organization continues its efforts to equate treating mental illness with psychotropic drugs to suicide. The ominous video shows a bright and handsome young boy getting a script from his smirking doctor, taking it the smiling pharmacist, returning home to his approving mother and then opening the prescription bag, pulling out a handgun and then putting it to his head.
This is a one-sided take on mental illness. I do agree that our country is far too quick to look for an easy fix for all that ails us. We are also far too dependent on drugs to cure illnesses that might be better handled with other forms of therapy. Believe me, I have two children whom I have been told by separate authorities need *assistance* in dealing with their "issues," but not one of them have been doctors. In fact, when I have asked my children's doctor about what steps I can do to address some of the various behaviors which seem to concern these "authorities" his answer was "see a children's behavioral psychologists, your last and final option after going through every other alternative should be drugs, most kids don't need them, but a lot of children could use some form of traditional therapy to help them with their negative behavior."
In fact, everyone I have every talked to from teachers, to counselors, school admins and doctors all advocate traditional psychology therapy over medication. So I am NOT advocating the overuse of medication and neither are most doctors I've encountered. To me, the above video is alarmist propaganda and does nothing more than scare people from getting their children the help they might need from "REAL" doctors. You know, people with medical degrees which indicate they have studied, applied knowledge on the mind and are intensely familiar with all known mental issues.
