Wife Swap's Stephen Fowler Finds Foul Behavior Not Such A Great Idea
Glosslip was asked to comment on ABC's reality show "Wife Swap", specifically the episodes featuring the Long/Stephens-Fowler families.
To be fair, neither k nor I watch "Wife Swap", we are above this type of reality show, we only watch sophisticated TV like "American Idol" and "Rock of Love" (I was channeling my inner Fowler), but if we are anything, we are accommodating. So with my task in hand, I went off to research what all the uproar is about.
Apparently, the San Francisco based Fowler family embody all the worst stereotypes which exist about the snobby, uber-educated, organic-munching, latte-drinking Range Rover driving set.
The show's theme is to pair up mismatched families for a week by swapping wives/mothers with the hopes that an "Odd Couple" type of hilarity will ensue. Unfortunately, ABC got more than they bargained for with the Long/Stephens-Fowler match up.
Here's a synopsis of the show from Reality Roll Call:
“Long/Stephens-Fowler” A mid-western family whose lives revolve around the “American Way” of fast food, 4X4s and paintball, swaps lives with a big city family focused on education, the environment and keeping their bodies healthy and trim, on “Wife Swap,” TONIGHT (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on ABC . The Longs from Missouri are a patriotic, all-American family who live for paint ball. Wife Gayla (37) is just one of the boys on the paint ball field, but at home she is happy to take care of all the household chores, which husband Alan has deemed “skirt work.” When Alan (38) is not wreaking havoc with his four wild and crazy boys — Cody (15), Coltan (10), Clayton (8) and Cameron (4) — he serves as the mayor of their 55-person town. The Longs are proud of their Midwestern roots and consider their lifestyle the “American way.” Corn dogs and fast food are staples in their home, and their exercise comes from riding ATVs. Alan and Gayla want their kids to have fun; education and the environment can take a backseat. Meanwhile, the Fowler family from Northern California consider themselves “citizens of the world.” They strive for excellence in both mind and body. Life coach and certified weight-loss hypnotherapist Rene (43) and British-born environmental entrepreneur Stephen (49) raise their children, Juliette (11) and James (8), to be both health and environmentally conscious. With a diet of strictly organic food and weekends spent doing “family fitness activities,” the kids admit they can’t remember the last time they had a French fry. Domestics are taken care of by a housekeeper, as that is regarded as a necessity in the Stephens-Fowler set. In order to ensure acceptance to an Ivy League school, they push their kids to excel in highbrow activities such as music, fencing and speaking foreign languages. Both children attend a bilingual school and have already visited over 12 countries.Several of the videos for this episode have been removed due to copyright infringement, but I was lucky to find these still up on up YouTube. Enjoy them while you can, because if the fury over Stephen Fowler's behavior continues, it won't be long until they are all pulled to protect the not-so-innocent. Videos after the jump: In a nutshell, Stephen Fowler displayed the most obnoxious, rude, disrespectful and bigoted behavior towards his wife-swap partner Gayla Long. For Gayla's part, she tried to shake off Stephen's increasingly vicious assaults, including insults on her intelligence, weight and lack of education, but even she couldn't take his arrogance. Rene Fowler was infinitely more gracious during her wife-swap duties with the Long Family. She still displayed an air of superiority, but without all the overt cruelty displayed by her loathsome husband. According to ValleyWag, Rene has since apologized for her husband's behavior, but we are still waiting for Stephen to address his utter douchbaggery. Tap, tap, tap...waiting Stephen. Please see the episodes below and tell us what YOU think about Stephen Fowler's behavior and was his apology adequate? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHKxqrZQKLw&feature=related
