Also, it’s important to not let an e-mail request sit in my inbox very long and that means longs nights leading up to the show. There are a million moving parts, so everyone on our PR team knows their roles and executes them thoroughly, while also remaining flexible in order to respond to trends that are breaking and announcements that are constantly being made leading up to the open of the trade event.
We also have a reliable computer system that helps us confirm media and credential them within days. An important part is understanding which journalist needs what, deadlines and a willingness to have a continual conversation, any day of the week. And yes, that even means giving up my cell phone number!
Rock bands (and artists) obviously dominate the music scene, and so it was with NAMM. Maybe I missed it, but was there an orchestra performing at any time? Were other areas/genres given equal time along with rock and pop?
Kevin Johnstone/NAMM: There were school bands and jazz concerts in connection to the NAMM Foundation's Music Education Days held at the Hilton. But throughout the show every type of music was represented. From the opening of the show with the U.S. Marine Corps Band, to The LA Scots pipe band at the Tribute and Latin, gospel and Mariachi. You name an instrument and genre of music and it is getting played at the NAMM Show.
How was everything organized? Was it organized according to instrument? How do you provide PR equally across the sea of products/services offered?
Kevin Johnstone/NAMM: There are various neighborhoods in the NAMM Show. Hall D is traditionally where many of the percussion brands exhibit, the new Venue section hosted the pro light and staging brands, DJ equipment and pro sound are in Hall A and B. Hall E is a great place to find new products and brands and it is home to the App and Gaming Pavilion.
$17 billion in products--does that include both analog and digital?
Lora Bodmer/NAMM: The 2011 industry wide global sales number was 16.3 billion. That includes all music instruments and product categories.
There are so many markets, from children's music education to the local rock scene to Broadway shows and movies. Is it possible to target those audiences effectively at NAMM?Continued on the next page
