Holiday DVD: Celtic Angels at Christmas
The Celtic Angels sing traditional Christmas songs that celebrate and praise the birth of Jesus on their latest DVD, Celtic Angels at Christmas. Who are the Celtic Angels? Gillian Boucher (fiddle), Stephanie Hardy (vocals), Kendra MacGillivray (fiddler), Sabra MacGillivray (Celtic dancing), Maggie MacInnes (clarsach [Celtic harp]), and Patricia Murray (vocals) provide introductions to the songs performed, along with a bit of history and sentiment about each selection.
Recorded on a set decorated with stark white branches and snowflakes, Celtic Angels at Christmas features step dancing in addition to Christmas music that includes “Oh Holy Night,” “I Wonder as I Wander,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” “Silent Night,” and “Ave Maria,” as well as traditional Celtic hymns and carols (“Taladh Criosda,” “Gura Mise Tha Fo Eislean,” “Laoidh Mhoire Mhaighdean”) performed in Gaelic. The only “modern” piece is “Winter Wonderland,” used in a clogging performance. Celtic Angels at Christmas is a simple production that concentrates solely on the performers.
Seen originally as a television special in 2008, Celtic Angels at Christmas, with its enormously talented, gifted performers, is a treat for fans of Celtic music, but it is not for fans of more high-tech, dynamic Christmas programs. (DVD release date: October 18, 2011)
