Interviews From The Edge: Ghosts of Eden Rock Gotham - Page 7
What is Velvet Grunge? What does that term mean to you?
Tom: Haha! Velvet Grunge is a term our friend Chris Gomez came up with to describe our music. Chris, Miles and I were hanging out one night and we were talking about the band and we couldn't really describe our sound. Chris wrote down like 100 different ideas and eventually came up with Velvet Grunge. It's kinda funny because when I think about it, I don't really think any of us have any idea what it means but somehow... it works.
I just called Chris to get a quote for what he thinks it is and this is what he had to say:
"Velvet Grunge" is a subgenre of contemporary alternative rock from New York City, particularly the Suburban areas. Inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal and grunge bands from the '80s and '90s, "Velvet Grunge" is generally characterized by subtly distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics, and has somewhat shed its apathetic point of view, characteristic of grunge bands from the 90's. The velvet grunge aesthetic is a bit more subtle and refined compared to other forms of rock music. Velvet Grunge musicians will be known for rejecting theatrics, while not taking themselves too seriously." Yes, he really did just say that. No, seriously.
