KidTunes: All I Want Is All You Need
Wow! March 8, 2011, is a day to go down in KidTune history. Hyperbole? I don’t think so. The release of David Weinstone Presents Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals’ album All I Want is as must-have as its competition, Groove Kid Nation’s The Wheels on the Bus. Happily the albums are so different—yet so great—every KidTune library has room for both.
There are nineteen tracks on All I Want, and listeners will be hooked at track one, “Hello,” a song that is exhuberantly welcoming (Okay, I’ve got to say it…“David Weinstone, you had me at ‘Hello.’”) The second track, “I Want a Puppy!” is one of several bluegrass songs that resonate with kids; another, “Count to Ten,” is a happy tribute to the age-old parents’ threat: “if you don’t get in here by the time I count to ten…” Other genres Weinstone puts to good use are punk, rock, pop, jazz, metal, and folk.
All I Want is pure delight. Its songs are irresistible and relevant---who hasn’t had complaints about sitting in a stroller? “Better Keep Your Eye on Me” is a warning to parents about what their little darlings can do in five seconds or less. Other songs, like “I Can Touch the Sky,” “Popcorn Tree,” and “Bathtub Soup” celebrate the pure joy of kiddom.
All I Want came highly recommended, which means that when I slipped it out of its jewel box, I was skeptical. Well, skeptical no more! It is an outstanding entry in the kidtunes library; enjoyable for kids, amusing for adults, it’s just plain terrific. But…”Goodbye” comes too soon.
