KidTunes: Keller Williams Sings to "Kids" on His Sixteenth Album
Keller Williams opens his latest CD, Kids, with an infectiously happy song about goats and kids, “My Neighbor is Happy Again.” Kids is Williams’ first album for children ages 3-7 and their families. This bluegrass flavored collection is bound to be a hit with kids with its inclusion of songs that deal with formerly taboo subjects. Is there any doubt children will get a case of the giggles over “Mama Tooted” a song about a mom who may or may not have gas? How about some “Good Advice” about nose and toe picking?
“Mommy, can I have some pink flamingos?,” is the opening line to “Because I Said So,” a song destined to win my heart (all you have to do is sing about flamingos). It’s a cute song about a kid asking his mom for some things that are meant to be answered, “No, you can’t always have what you want. Why? Because I said so.” It’s a mini-lesson in being reasonable.
Whether singing about coloring (“Keep It on the Paper”), “Taking a Bath,” or “Grandma’s Feather Bed” (a new take on the Jim Connor song made popular by John Denver), Williams entertains with a variety of musical styles and lyrics kids will enjoy. Kids sparkles with invention and a sense of informal familiarity, giving it an improvisational feel.
Keller Williams happily confesses that his music has been influenced by his children, and they are a part of Kids. For those who prefer their KidTunes to be kidless, be warned that some of the songs include--yes, even feature--a young child singing. This joyful little voice reflects the essence of the entire collection.
Kids will hit the street and on-line outlets October 26.
