KidTunes: Lucky Diaz and The Family Jam Band - Oh Lucky Day
Imagine a world in which you never suffer self-doubt or feelings of inferiority because you receive an endless stream of reinforcement and praise. You would never be afraid to try something because you’d know “you can do it,” and if things don’t quite work out, it wouldn’t really matter because “you’re special.” In fact, you would be encouraged to try the things that appeal to you and not feel that you had to prove yourself in areas that don’t interest you.
Lucky Diaz and The Family Jam Band offer children such a world with their collection Oh Lucky Day. With music that channels the sixties (shades of Freddie Cannon, Harper’s Bizarre, John Denver, Kinks, a little bubblegum, a little Beatles), Oh Lucky Day offers songs that are pleasantly filled with positive messages (“Like Never Before”), and ends with a lovely lullaby (“Dreamland,” featuring Holly Conlan).
Songs like “Gato Astronauto” (a favorite) feature clever word play and entertain with imaginative images. The first song on the album is “Say What,” an exercise in scat that will have kids giggling and quickly imitating what sounds like nonsense. Oh Lucky Day’s take on nursery rhymes (“Smiling”) makes every story—even Jack and Jill and Humpty Dumpty—have a happy ending (“Heart and Soul” serves as a bridge in “Smiling”—a delightful surprise).
Oh Lucky Day is a love letter from parent to child, and its songs are engaging and sweet, with relaxed acoustic styling. Three musicians comprise Lucky Diaz and the Family Band: composer and lead singer, Lucky Diaz; songwriter/vocalist Alisha Gaddis; and percussionist Theron Derrick. They perform songs that are positive and empowering, something we all need to hear. (Release date: May 10, 2011; available as DVD/MOD and digital download.)
