KidTunes: Recess Music Scores Again with La Bella Stella
With Earth Day just around the corner (April 22), Recess Music just released its newest DVD in the “Celebrate Earth Music Series!,” La Bella Stella. More than just a celebration of the Earth, La Bella Stella celebrates the moon (“Man in the Moon,” Wayne from Maine; “Earth’s Satellite,” Wendy Whitten), planets (“Pluto,” Rocknocerous; “Neptune Lullaby,” Dr. Planet), stars (“Shooting Stars,” Martha Johnson), and night (“I Love the Dark,” Tom Knight; “Nocturnal,” Ken Lonnquist). In fact, it celebrates the whole galaxy (“Galaxy Song,” Andy Z). And, appropriately enough, there are lullabies, relaxing songs, and other night music.
Besides introducing children to the wonders of the universe, La Bella Stella also introduces a variety of musical styles including country rock (“Gravity,” AudraRox), old-time jazz, folk, ethnic, soft rock, and oldies. There is a lot of fun to be had in the lyrics and sounds of La Bella Stella; some songs teach, some songs soothe, some encourage the imagination, and others make listeners want to get up and move. Every song proves that there’s no reason to be afraid of the dark.
Other songs on La Bella Stella are: “Nature’s Lullaby,” Maria Alley; “Aurora Borealis,” Lori & J.D. Uponen; “Shadows,” Mary Kaye; “Safe at Home,” Banana Slug String Band; “Harmony of the Spheres,” Laura Giosh; and “So Long to the Day,” Charity and the JAMband. The “Celebrate Earth Music Series!” includes four more collections: Celebrate Earth, Growing Veggie Soup, Ocean Motion, and Wild Child. Each is available as an MP3 download or Audio CD, and they are recommended for children ages four through eleven.
Recess Music is a music production company that pledges to “entertain, encourage, and educate children and families about our magnificent green planet through Earth-friendly music.” A portion of the proceeds of the sale of La Bella Stella go to The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center (an air and space science center in Concord, NH).
