Ha Ha, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (my fave “grown-up group”), I’ve waited for years for you to give me what I wanted for Christmas (a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes holiday album), but now I’ve got something even better--Mama Said Nog You Out by The Jimmies. It’s a rockin’ holiday collection with punk sensibility, exactly what I wanted. Available from Barnes & Noble exclusively, this is the album that’s going to punk rock my Christmas, Chanukah, and Kwanzaa (what we like to call Kwanzukamas).

It seems like just the other day that I first listened to The Jimmies’ Practically Ridiculous; probably because it was. Readers may recall that I was unwilling to share my copy with the kids (unless I download another). In the true spirit of the holiday season, I say without reservation, “Kids, keep your hands off my Jimmies CDs. (You can listen, but that’s it.)”

The first track, “Nogturne in C Minor,” is a paean to egg nog and delightfully introduces a collection of holiday songs (Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa) that even the grinchiest of reviewers can love. So how does a holiday album manage to make me so merry? Well…no Little Drummer Boy, no 12 Days of Christmas,” and no “Auld Lang Syne.”  But it’s not what’s not on the album that makes it special, it’s what is included.

Pretty much convinced (by my parents) that “Nothin’ for Christmas” was written about me (so where are my royalties?), I was thrilled to hear an updated version of this homage to bad behavior (“ate all the fundraiser candy bars…experimented with isotopes…”). Thanks to Ashley Albert's tinkering, “Jingle Bells” goes punk with “Jingle Bells Redux,” and it’s sung exactly the way it should be in 2011.
