Mixtape Review: Bow Wow's Greenlight 3
Bow Wow is, by far, one of the most relentless rappers in the game today.
When I downloaded my copy of the Greenlight 3 mixtape this morning, I had a feeling I was about to be impressed. Although he seldom gets credit for it, Bow Wow has been making music for more than a decade and seems to have a knack for knowing what it takes to keep his fan base hooked.
He spent most of his teen years as a musical heartthrob and at 23, he is already a seasoned entertainer And, true to his many Twitter promises, Bow Weezy has returned in full force on Greenlight 3 and does not disappoint.
Gone are the cheesy hooks, cookie-cutter lyrics and predictable transitions of Bow's earlier raps. Greenlight 3 is raw, real and disarmingly honest. In nearly every song, Bow lets his flow become the focus of the song, rather than simply relying on the beat. After vibing to the catchy "Why They Hatin" I clicked past "Talk That" (another great song) over to "I'm Goin Outta My Mind," one of the most buzzed about tracks from this release.
In many ways, "I'm Goin Outta Mind" sets the tone for the entire mixtape and if I had to recommend only one song it would be the one I would pick. For the first time, Bow Wow opens up about his personal life, his insecurities and his bouts with depression. He talks about how he felt when he found out his girlfriend was pregnant--"breathless"--and about falling out with friends and family. It is not often that you hear a rapper let their guard down and expose themselves for who they really are. It takes guts to go into detail like that and Bow pulls it off with sincerity.
