Original Jazz Classics Remasters from Concord
Sounds like a stock brokerage firm – or a legal firm: Blakey, Fitzgerald, Getz, Monk, Peterson, & Tjader. If you’re interested in jazz stock or advice in the field of jazz, this group certainly had the talent, skill and experience to have represented you well. They did fine for themselves and stand tall as giants in their field. It would be a surprise if several of these names were not included on just about anyone’s list of the top ten greats in jazz.
On March 15, 2011, Concord Records released four new titles in their continuing series of Original Jazz Classics Remastered. These four CD’s hit the street on the first anniversary of this project by Concord. The series showcases pivotal recordings from past decades by artists, such as these, whose influence on jazz is immeasurable. Remastering includes 24-bit technology by Joe Tarantino. The quality of the technology is impressive and you’ll enjoy cranking up the volume for detailed listening.
Each of the four discs includes several bonus tracks: some are alternate takes and some are previously unreleased material. There is one exception. The Stan Getz – Cal Tjader disc contains almost forty-five minutes of first take perfection. Says Doug Ramsey, author of the liner notes for the new release, “What we have here is a demonstration that six masters who have never before played together as a group can produce timeless music in the common language of jazz.”
An added bonus for listeners is the appearance of other jazz legends in the groups along with the headliners. For instance, Vince Guaraldi plans piano in the Tjader-Getz Sextet. John Coltrane, Gigi Gryce, and Art Blakey can be heard on Monk’s Music while Ray Brown joins Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson.
