Perhaps Whitney Houston Should Quit While She's Ahead
The once great Whitney Houston has seen better days.
Houston embarked on her Nothing But Love world tour, her first since 2004, when her life began to unravel. Houston spent much of the last few years battling a drug addiction, which some report to have been to crack cocaine, as her marriage to bad boy singer Bobby Brown disintegrated. With reports of Whitney being close to death poured in, her former producer and mentor Clive Davis stepped in to help Whitney out.
Davis, along with the help of Whitney's mother, famous gospel singer Cissy Houston, got Whitney to go to rehab and helped her clean herself up. Davis' philosophy was to get Whitney back working and performing and the rest would take care of itself. However, based on the reports of terrible performances, an oft-times disheveled Houston, whose stage act has left many booing and wanting their money back, it seems Whitney's not fully recovered.
Last night at London's O2 arena, Whitney attempted to perform her single "I Will Always Love You" to disastrous results. Even Whitney acknowledged that she wasn't delivering the goods and told the audience,""Sometimes the old girl sings, but not tonight. I want to do it, but she doesn't want to. ... She's getting a little ... temperamental, even."
Critics said she was breathy, had to pause several times during songs and only managed two verses of "The Greatest Love Of All." All in all, it was a terrible performance, which is a mirror of the problems she had during her tour of Australia last month.
Clearly this is a sad thing to see, and it's obvious to everyone but Whitney and her handlers she simply is not ready, and may never be ready again, to be performing live. If she really did abuse her body with drugs, especially crack cocaine, it's possible Whitney has destroyed her once perfect voice. And that's just a tragedy. Like any gift, Whitney's vocal abilities should have been cherished and respected, but she made some bad choices.
Instead of carrying on with this painful charade, I'd say for the sake of all involved Whitney should abandon her tour and figure out if there's any hope of restoring her voice. I just hope that these issues aren't related to continued drug abuse, like many of the tabloids have suggested. That would be plain stupid. You said it best Whitney, crack is whack.
