Raja Teams Up with Austin Young for “Diamond Crowned Queen” Music Video
Blurring the lines of sexuality, RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 Winner Raja unveils his/her artful collaboration, the “Diamond Crowned Queen” music video today. With the help of prolific photographer and director Austin Young, Raja’s Billboard breakout club single is brought to life in a “dragmatic” fashion.
The video’s concept was swiftly created by Austin Young and Raja together, not long before shooting began. The entire video embodies the imagery and artistic styling of Young’s celebrated photography. “Diamond Crowned Queen” features gender-bending racy love scenes between Raja and celebrity friends, such as: Raven from RuPaul’s Drag Race II, Adam Lambert’s touring drummer Tommy Jo Ratliff and gay icon Mario Diaz.
“I love working with Raja. He embodies my ideal of ‘perfect, gender-non-specific beauty,’” explains Austin Young. “I wanted to show Sutan as a sexy man and a sexy woman—and everywhere in between—to play with ideas of gender in the exciting way that Raja is able to walk the fine line of masculine/feminine.”
Shot on location at poptART Gallery in the Korea Town district of Los Angeles, the “Diamond Crowned Queen” music video emulates an avant-garde fashion show with designer original clothes from Skin.Graft and Marco Marco, as well as a few of the striking outfits Raja wore on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Raja, a renowned celebrity makeup artist, did his own hair and makeup and received some styling guidance from Squeaky Blonde and Fade-Dra.
