Rihanna Tops Billboard Social 50
For the first time, Rihanna has overtaken all other artists on Billboard’s Social 50 chart, passing Lady Gaga, who has held the spot for some time, and who has since fallen to the #5 spot, now also under Shakira, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.
Thinks just keep looking up for Rihanna, hot on the heels of her Loud tour, with a performance tonight in Boston. Highlighting her tour is her latest song, Man Down, hitting top 10 of the Billboard Music Charts, in no small part due to the ongoing press surrounding the song’s controversial video.
Rihanna recently displaced Lady Gaga as the most-fanned female artist on Facebook, coming in at just under 41,400,000 fans, compared to less than 41,300,000 for the high-heeled self-proclaimed “monster” mom. While other artists like to refer to their fans as their army of followers, the Barbados-born singer thanked her fans on the popular networking site with an update calling them her “Navy.”
Artists have had to work even harder these days, even in social networking sites, to gain and maintain their fan followings. Katy Perry even created a Facebook page for Kathy Terry, an alter ego her latest music video for song Last Friday Night (TGIF) was based on. Rihanna and Gaga frequently provide status updates and routinely retweet their fans’ comments on Twitter.
Gaga still reins supreme on Twitter, with Rihanna coming in at just over 6.3 million followers compared to Lady Gaga’s 11.9 million. Eminem appears to not be as active on the micro-blogging site, with just under 5 million followers.
