Alfred Music Publishing, “the world’s largest educational music publisher,” recently released a smorgasbord of familiar classical favorites–two books of sheet music containing some of the most beautiful and popular pieces ever written, a/k/a 100 of the World’s Most-Beloved Masterpieces in Two Volumes. There are 50 pieces “in their original form” in each book, and the volumes are priced at $24.99 each. The books offer original, non-simplified piano compositions, and are not for beginners. The music was selected and edited by E.L. Lancaster and Kenon D. Renfrow.

Volume 1 includes composers with last names that begin with the letters A-G, and contains works by Bach (“Prelude and Fugue in C Minor”), Elgar, Bartok, Debussy (“Claire de Lune”), Beethoven (“Moonlight Sonata”), Grieg, Chopin, and Brahms among others. Volume 2 is comprised of composers whose last names begin with the letters H-Z, and includes works by Schumann, Handel (“Sarabande”), Mendelssohn, von Weber, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, and more. Notably, three pieces by Scott Joplin (“The Easy Winners,” “The Entertainer,” and “The Maple Leaf Rag”) and Eric Satie’s “First Gymnopedie” also appear in Volume 2.

In all, the works of 48 composers are found in the two volumes, representing four stylistic periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary. Musicians interested in having the works of a variety of composers will be pleased with this collection representing favorites of both pianists and piano students. The level of difficulty ranges from intermediate to advanced. Added editorial markings “such as phrasing, expression marks, pedal marks, and dynamics where appropriate” make the music easier to perform.
