SoundCloud: The You Tube for Sound
SoundCloud, launched in 2008 by Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss, is a social media platform for sound, any kind of sound, not just music. Recently SoundCloud launched a new version of the site, allowing for improved listener experience, faster sharing, and new ways to build audiences. You Tube's success indicates we humans seem to see more than we hear, with the exception of countless unauthorized uses of copyrighted music. But SoundCloud's 30 million registered users reveal we are listening as much as viewing.
Collaborators, distributors, promoters and sound creators of all types are swapping music and audio at unprecedented rates. Professional musicians are uploading latest album releases. Comedians are recording shows (preferably ones where people laugh). Production music and SFX (sound effects) composers and creators are experimenting with new sounds, including the use of smartphone apps that allow immediate upload to SoundCloud's platform. One such app is Korg's iMS-20, a fully featured recording studio for the iPad based on the legendary analog synthesizer by Korg.
Following is an interview with SoundCloud founder and CTO, Eric Wahlforss. In addition, the interview includes comments from Duana Stanley, Backend Engineer, Robb Böhnke, iOS Developer, and SoundCloud's VP of Engineering, Alexander Grosse.
Wahlforss started out as an electronic musician at the age of 10 and is now a producer. In 2012 he released an album called Ecclesia. According to a Huffington Post article, Wahlforss launched the album as an iPad app. You can hear Eric's music on SoundCloud...of course.
NOTE: See video of Wahlforss at Slush 2012 at end of article.
