This Week in Music: Dave Matthews, Lennon, Rihanna, MTV and Taylor Swift
There are lots happening in the music business these days. Here are five news items of note.
1.) Dave Matthews Sneak Attack
Music great Dave Matthews played an unannounced show before a Blue Man Group performance in New York. The the 44 year old musician played in the small, 300 seat Blue Man Group theater at lower Manhattan 's Astor Palace. Matthews had seen the Blue Man Group show in '92 and was blown away, so he decided to play an acoustic set before as a surprise treat for the lucky 300 that were in attendance.
2.) Lennon's Lyrics
John Lennon's hand written lyrics to the famous Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" will be sold at a Beverly Hills auction next month. The lyrics are projected to sell for nearly $200,000.
3.) Rihanna's got Nominations
Pop star Rihanna has a total of 18 nominations for the 2011 Billboard awards that are being held on May 22nd, in Las Vegas. Close behind is rapper Eminem with 16 nominations, and Lady Gaga with 12. There are 46 total categories, so Rihanna could potentially walk away with a good percentage of them.
4.) MTV Video Music Awards Date Set
MTV has set a date for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The 28th annual awards show will take place on August 28th and expects nearly 11 million viewers.
5.) Taylor Swift Got Money
Country music start Taylor Swift recently bought her parents a 5,000 sq/foot house in Nashville, Tennessee for 1.4 million dollars. The house was built in 1920 and was recently renovated. At the same time, she also bought herself a house in Los Angeles.
