Apple Ponders Hulu Purchase
Is Apple about to set its sights on challenging Netflix's dominance of the streaming video market? Sources close to a possible deal say yes.
Financial news network Bloomberg reports that two individuals tied to ongoing discussions say Apple is seriously considering purchase of Hulu, a streaming video provider replete with movie and television show content. Hulu media owners News Corp and Comcast are offering five year contracts for someone who will come in and take over, according to the report.
Apple has made a number of changes to its iTunes Store in order to increase its video offerings to consumers of its devices. The iPad market alone has recently been reported to be larger than some PC type markets, and even cutting into Mac sales due to its increasing popularity. Apple hopes to compound on this success by ensuring iTunes users have more content to rent or purchase.
Bloomberg predicts a hefty price tag of over $2 billion, but purchasing Hulu would also add a much-needed video streaming service to Apple's repertoire of video sales and rentals, completing its arsenal in possible preparations for an all-out assault on competitor Netflix.
