The BBC has commissioned a new lesbian drama to be released titled Lip Service. Harriet Braun, who has written for such shows as Hotel Babylon and Mistresses is the creator and writer for this six-part show.

BBC Three announced the production's cast of the three main female characters: Laura Fraser, Scottish actress known for her role in A Knight's Tale, Ruta Getmindas, who has been seen in the The Lost Samaritan, and Fiona Button who has television appearances in The Bill and The Palace.

The show is based in Glasgow, Scotland and focuses around the lives and loves of the women, all in their twenties.

Since the completion of the hit US series The L Word, there has been an open void in gay TV drama for women. Braun, who will have a lot to compete with the huge success of The L Word, seems to have created a show which has some interesting characters worth watching.  In a BBC press release, Ms. Braun described her inspiration for the new series :

"I loved The L Word but it's high time we saw some contemporary British lesbians, with all the bad weather, trips to the pub and repressed emotions that go with that. It will be as funny as it is pathos filled, because in my experience that's how life is."

The main cast play out the roles of a photographer, aka Frankie played by Ruta Getmindas, Frankie's ex, Cat (Laura Fraser), who perhaps still has feelings for Frankie and the third main character being Cat's flat-mate Tess (Fiona Button), who is also Cat's best friend.

BBC UK has set the release date for Spring 2010.

Keep your eyes posted for the new drama to gain a lot more interest  closer to its release date.
