There are some songs that never get tiresome, no matter how long they’ve been around or how many times we’ve heard them . Beginning June 4 (check local listings), PBS stations will present Opry Memories, a special program filled with unforgettable songs performed by some of country music’s greatest legends. These performances have been “preserved and restored to pristine condition, with top quality sound and video and all are in beautiful, full color”-- if it weren’t for the outdated styles and the fact that many of these performers are now dead, one wouldn’t know that this is actually archival footage; it looks that good.

John Schneider hosts Opry Memories from the Grand Ole Opry House; all of the performances were taped at the Ryman Auditorium, the former home of the Grand Ole Opry. Opening with the iconic (on many levels) “Stand by Your Man,” sung by Tammy Wynette, the program features performances by Dolly Parton (“I Will Always Love You”), Loretta Lynn (“Coal Miner’s Daughter”), Johnny Cash (“Folsom Prison Blues”), Conway Twitty (“Hello, Darlin’”), and many other popular country artists.

Opry Memories is an entertaining, respectful tribute to the Opry and the stars who performed there. It is also a memorable treat for fans of classic country, an engaging trip down…oh, you know. One word of caution: if you scare easily, do not glance at the performers faces above their eyebrows; there’s some scary stuff up there. Those pledging $225 or more will receive a DVD/4-CD set of Opry Memories.
